POLAR EXPLORER
(Commissioned by the Preservation Society of Allegany County, Cumberland, MD)
Inspired by Roald Amundsen (1872-1928), the first man ever to reach the South Pole (December 14, 1911); and the first to complete an ocean voyage through the Northwest Passage and around the northern Canadian coast. Embodying the spirit of those endeavors, this explorer battles his way through the icy winds and piercing flakes of a sudden blizzard as his bravely defiant strides bear him across the frozen terrain with which his left foot becomes encrusted. Though lacerated and blown about, he continues to dig his footprints into the underside of the Earth's rotation, thereby leaving his mark upon the landscape and the history of the South Pole. With newly-gathered data in his backpack, he turns upon the axis of the world and with his right foot disembarks this hostile region formerly unknown to man. He is homeward bound with new information and a greater understanding of our planet's farthest reaches.
